From Morocco, through Tunisia to Lebanon and Jordan, the Forming Responsible Citizens project (FRC) has managed to extend its reach in the Mediterranean region. It has also been possible to extend some school activities thanks to the success of the One School One Year co-financing campaign.
This is a pilot project whose purpose is to impact on the prevention of youth violence, and on the prevention of violence against girls and women – emphasizing the gender equality approach and the spread of the values of responsible citizenship.
These objectives are specified through the reinforcement of the school as the main vehicle for empowerment of future generations in the face of global challenges.
Action plan:
The project follows three main phases.
- Firstly, a diagnostic study is carried out to identify the existing curriculum and the resources on civic education at the secondary education level.
- Once the identification is developed, conclusions and recommendations are issued that will serve as guidance for designing and preparing a guide that presents teaching exercises to address and learn about issues related to the prevention of violence, gender equality and active and responsible citizenship.
- The finished material leads to the third phase of training, where trained teachers can make use of the new material with their students.
History of the project:
The concept of this project was developed on the initiative of the Ideaborn Foundation (in partnership with Ideaborn S.L.), throughout 2014, with the aim of strengthening the prevention of youth violence and violence against girls and women. In 2015 it was finally possible to carry it out, thanks to the support of the Union for the Mediterranean and funding from the Kingdom of Norway and the Principality of Monaco.
Between the spring and summer of 2015, Morocco and Tunisia started the work coordinated by the local partners “Moroccan Centre for Civic Education” and “Social Development Empowerment Centre“. These two countries are currently implementing the third phase of the project. During the summer of 2017, after having managed to expand the funding of the FRC, Lebanon and Jordan joined the initiative. Research activities are currently being carried out, coordinated by local partners: the Aydan Foundation and the Lebanese National Commission for Unesco, in Lebanon, and the Jordanian Centre for Civic Education, in Jordan.
