Since April 2017, 9 citizenship clubs have been born in Tunisian secondary schools. More than 250 direct beneficiaries – both teachers and students – are part of this new community.
It has already been 8 months since the teachers of the Siliana and Nabeul region began the path of responsible citizenship. These education professionals have been disseminating the knowledge and experiences acquired during the training in their schools, and have also managed to promote exchange initiatives among participants from different institutes.
The first step for the teachers has been to establish school clubs focusing (as main elements) on the themes of non-violence, equality, and peace building and democracy.
The clubs in action:
- For the Maktar Technical High School:
Responsible Citizenship Club
The theater club
Environmental Citizenship Club
Club Hear my voice to know me
SANAD responsible citizenship to fight radicalization
- For the March 2, 1934 High School, Korba:
Hear My Voice
Tunisia & Peace – No to terrorism
Women for Change
- For the Rue Elmenzah High School, BeniKalled
Civitás libera
The projects promoted by the new methodology are designed so that young people can experience civic life in a practical way. The most relevant actions so far have been:
- Nature experiences – learning the culture and the protection of the environment
- Carrying out playful activities that encourage responsibility and cooperation: the creation and maintenance of gardens, theatre workshops, and studies of local products
- Research activities, at public fairs and with colleagues in school, improving awareness of surroundings and neighbours.
The Forming Responsible Citizens project is in partnership with Ideaborn Foundation, the Moroccan Center for Civic Education, the Social Development and Empowerment Center, the Jordanian Centre for Civic Education, the Adyan Foundation and the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO.
It is labeled by Union for Mediterranean and financed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway& the Principality of Monaco.
